Chapter 30

As I drive home I’m thinking about how winter days grow shorter, everyday becomes dark a little bit earlier. In Utah there’s a time change in fall, we set our clocks backwards 1 hour. Then in springtime our clocks go forward 1 hour. They say it makes summer days longer with more sunlight. Winter days are just as long but with less sunlight. It seems kind of senseless to me. I don’t think that Mr. Sun sets his clock back an hour...hehehe. Sunshine is so good for us all, humans and animals, that vitamin D we get from sunshine is healthy, it helps with our immune system and keeps us from being depressed. I know that freezing cold temperatures with longer dark days don’t fill me with joy. Sometimes it makes me wonder who makes these decisions; Like what are you people thinking when you do things like this?

On my way home I’m thinking about how or where I’m going to get food for Big Boys friends. I know where there were a lot of not only rose hips, but wild apples trees with perfectly ripe small branches of Johnathan apples on them. This time of the year wild apples are as sweet as they get. They are full of juice, they explode in your mouth with every bite of pure goodness. Many times I’ve picked a 10 gallon bucket of them for myself. And of course some extras for a yummy treat when I see horses along back roads in my travels. It’s always fun to stop and give beautiful horses a handful of sweet apples. It’s probably like a piece of candy to them. Some horses know I stop when I have good treats, so when my blue truck turns, and is coming down a dirt road heading their way they get all excited, twisting circles and bucking while trotting my way.

That’s it! I’m going to stop at the trees and break off some branches with 4 or 5 small apples on them, then I’ll tie them together in a small bunch that Big Boy can carry back up to his friends. Hopefully helping put a little something in their empty bellies to keep them a bit warmer during these chilly days. Days that are leading into even more chilly nights that are coming sooner with this time change. Bringing darkness in my opinion way too early.

I stopped and broke off about 20 small branches, using fishing line to make some bundles. I decided there’s still enough time left in this day, so why not take these small branches of delicious apples back up, leaving them next to Big Boy’s food dish. It would be interesting to see if Big Boy could figure it out, gathering them up and delivering them to his friends for a mid day snack. Back up the mountain and back up the trail I hike with my load of branches. There was no sign of Big Boy, he probably had called it off for the day.
